I taught a Bill of Rights unit for my host teacher. This was a two-week unit which included tech, discussion, a visit from a community member, and a self-reflection at the end. I taught this unit because it was the area of our content area my host teacher felt the most unfamiliar with. My goal was to help her feel more comfortable with this unit. In return, she helped me feel more comfortable with geography tests and games.

All College Meeting (ACM) Moderator
College of the Atlantic
During my time as the ACM moderator, I planned and facilitated the ACM. This included being a point person of contact for communication to and from the committee to the community, planning dialogues in response to community input, setting up preparations for the meetings, facilitating the meetings/presentations/dialogues that occur during ACM, and in certain circumstances use conflict resolution skills to ensure a safe space is maintained. Through this, I learned various ways to run meetings, facilitate discussions, and ensure everyone's voice is heard if it wants to be. These are skills I will rely on when I am moderating my own classroom; to be a good teacher is to be a good facilitator.

This experience, although not in a classroom, is what I believe best prepares me for the interpersonal aspect of being a teacher. Being a teacher can be just providing information and hoping your students retain some of it past the test date, but to me it is way more than that. Being a teacher means that you deal with people every day, all day long. In addition to that, students bring their struggles from outside school inside school and you, as the teacher have to work with that. By being an RA I have learned how to listen when people need me to, how to give advice or resources when needed or desired, how to manage my time between my personal life, academic life, and RA life, and I also have learned how to maintain a house even when someone's struggles or behavior may be negatively impacting the rest of the house community. Lastly, being an RA taught me how to be a supportive authority figure which is exactly the type of teacher I want to be. Education is more than just facts.
